SML
Small Medium Large

Electronic / Jazz

"Small Medium Large" by SML is a sonic kaleidoscope, blending the fervent energy of live jazz with the meticulous precision of studio wizardry. Each track is a journey through soundscapes that pulse like a living heartbeat, from the cosmic spirals of “Feed the Birds” to the relentless groove of “Three Over Steel.” This album doesn’t just play music; it paints it, challenging the very definition of jazz with every note.

Zach Bryan
The Great American Bar Scene
Americana

I have the impression that Zach Bryan followed me for two years and took so many notes on my musical tastes and tics that he created the perfect album that I couldn't help but like: well-played guitars, slaps guitars, harmonics, pianos, violins... everything exactly in the right place and all played excellently, but always slightly crooked in order to accompany his stories of unlucky loves, sense of inadequacy and American bar dropouts. I cannot, in sincerity, judge this album "objectively" because a million emotions and sensations overlap, so I will tell you the following: if you are the type of person who, seeing an acoustic guitar, immediately thinks of playing it and singing that subtle sense of pride in being a loser but with a certain style, put on this record, take the car and go for a roadtrip in the nearest countryside - it will do your soul a lot of good.

Dirty Three
Love Changes Everything
Instrumental Rock

Dirty Three's Love Changes Everything is a remarkable comeback after a twelve-year hiatus. The album showcases the band's signature blend of raw energy and emotional depth, driven by the unique interplay between Warren Ellis' violin, Jim White's drums, and Mick Turner's guitar. Their improvisational style creates a captivating listening experience, with tracks that shift between tight, focused moments and open, exploratory passages. The album's highlights include the final tracks, where the band's chemistry is on full display, capturing the essence of their dynamic and evolving sound. Love Changes Everything feels like an intimate conversation between old friends, making each listen a rewarding experience.

Been Stellar
Scream From New York, NY
Indie-rock

Ok, there will come a time when I will get bored of the mythology of the 90s, of the thundering guitars and of that sense of uneasy hope for a future that was not dark and toxic, but inhabited by very self-confident and a little sad people. I too will get to the point of not being able to stand the voices that scream in the style of Texas is The Reason, the black and white images of New York and the solid but slowed down melodies. The day will come, but it is not today: today I listen to Been Stellar and I feel like in the summer of 1998, waiting for autumn clinging to my Converse All Stars ready to press on the pedals of my guitar trying to remake their songs.

Total Blue
Total Blue

Electronic / Jazz Noire / Ambient

Total Blue’s debut album is like stepping into a sunlit, nostalgic dream where '80s new-age and jazz noir merge seamlessly. The trio—Nicky Benedek, Alex Talan, and Anthony Calonico—craft an opulent soundscape rich with fretless bass, muted trumpets, and lush analog warmth. Tracks like "The Path" and "Corsair" evoke maritime tranquility and digital nostalgia, reminiscent of vintage cassette tapes and high-end studio productions. This album isn’t just music; it's a luxurious auditory journey that transports you to an era of smooth, sensuous melodies and evocative atmospheres. Total Blue masterfully proves there’s no such thing as too smooth.

Kneecap
Fine Art
Rap

From Belfast comes the biggest rap punch in the face this month: a mix of dubstep, grime and punk sung and played as if we were all at the same crazy party. Building an autonomous culture is always complex, especially if you speak one of the most widely spoken languages in the world: yet it is impossible not to find an authentic, indigenous root in Kneecap's rap, something that has nothing to do with the USA, but much more more with the United Kingdom, with club culture and - why not - with Ireland. A musical delirium with three tremendously engaging "Masters of Ceremony" that will involve you in a delirious party that will remain in your ears for a long time. Or in your liver, take your pick.

Clairo
Charm
Alternative

Clairo's Charm is a captivating album that seamlessly blends soft rock with heartfelt storytelling. The album evokes nostalgia, using lush, vintage instruments like Wurlitzer, mellotron, and gentle piano to create an atmosphere of whispered secrets and intimate moments. Clairo's soft vocals add to the sensual, dreamlike quality of the album, reminiscent of murmurs in a lover's ear. While Charm builds upon the '70s-inspired sounds of Clairo's previous work, it stands out with its playful grooves and sophisticated sound. This unique blend creates a tender, dreamy journey through the complexities of human connection, making it a truly captivating listening experience.

A minor place
Songs are Lying
Indie rock

I love when artists' ideological references are extremely clear, familiar to me and ignite in me that sense of innate and total synergy with their goals. And no, this time I'm not talking about Lenin on the cover, but rather about the obvious reference to Big Star, that A Minor Place made: an act of love to melodic simplicity, sweetness and melancholy, but also to the brilliant beauty of simple but extremely well-curated music. Once again, a self-produced album has ignited a spark in my ears and I felt the need to share it with you. You will not regret having followed my advice, but above all having listened to them.

Historical milestone

Every month, a fresh milestone from music history served up for you.

Mode for Joe
Joe Henderson
 - 1966

Jazz

In 1966, Joe Henderson blew his final notes as a leader for Blue Note Records until 1985, leaving a blazing testament in the form of "Mode for Joe." With a lineup of jazz titans like a young, vibrant Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and a fiery Lee Morgan on trumpet, the album is a hard bop powerhouse, pulsating with energy and virtuosity. "A Shade of Jade" shimmers with Henderson's brilliance and authority, a beacon of melodic invention, while "Caribbean Fire Dance" ignites a creative inferno between Henderson and Morgan. The album concludes with Morgan's "Free Wheelin'," a tightly coiled spring of melodies, released with a sharp, clear resonance. "Mode for Joe" It's a time capsule of a moment when hard bop was a supernova, illuminating the jazz cosmos with its incandescent energy.
